First Death Penalty for Petit Murders

The Hartford Courant and most other news outlets are reporting on the latest phase of a saga that has gripped the Dartmouth community, my home state of Connecticut, and the entire nation over the past three years.

A Superior Court jury today sentenced Steven Hayes to death for the murders of Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her daughters, Hayley and Michaela, at their Cheshire home in July 2007.

Husband and father of the victims, Dr. William Petit, Jr. ’78, has kept absolutely amazing composure during this prolonged ordeal, on display once again today during the emotional press conference following the verdict.  His eldest daughter, Hayley, would have been a classmate of mine in the Class of 2011 had she lived to see matriculation in the fall of 2007.
