Dartmouth rallies to upend Brown 3-2

Dartmouth had its back against the wall as it trailed Brown 2-1 with under 5 minutes to play, but staged another furious comeback and sent the senior class out in style with a 3-2 win over the Brown Bears. Lee Stempniak scored his first goal since January by knocking a Brian Van Abel rebound over a fallen netminder to tie the game at two. That set the stage for Mike Ouellette and Hugh Jessiman. As the clock wound under a minute to play in regulation and the game appeared to be heading to overtime, the duo skated in on a two on one break. Jessiman sent a pass to the front of the net that Ouellette knocked over Yann Danis’ pads to light the lamp and send the crowd of over 3900 into a frenzy.

Dartmouth dominated the play for most of the game, but Brown goalie Yann Danis stopped 45 of 48 shots to give Brown a chance to steal the game. Nick Boucher made 21 saves for Dartmouth. Trevor Byrne got the game’s lone power play goal, as he rocketed a wrister off the far post and into the net to tie the game at one in the 2nd period. Dartmouth finishes the home schedule with a record of 12-3-0 at Thompson Arena this year. Dartmouth finished 1-4 with the man advantage, while Brown went 0-3 on the PP.

With the win, Dartmouth improved to 15-11-1 (11-9-0), re-enters a tie for fourth place with Brown, and can finish no worse than a tie for 7th in the conference with Colgate and thus is guaranteed home ice in the first round of the playoffs in two weeks. Dartmouth hits the road for the final weekend of the year to take on RPI on Friday and Union on Saturday. If Dartmouth sweeps and picks up two wins, they would be assured of fourth place and a first round bye in the ECAC playoffs since they hold the tiebreaker over Brown. It will not be easy though, since the team is only 3-8-0 on the road this year thus far (the tie came in a neutral site game vs. UNH).
